Web search is one of the most important activities for web users to efficiently finding useful information from an enormous amount of information on the Web. Nevertheless, current user interfaces for web search engines are similar to each other and our understanding of their effectiveness in web search remains unclear. Most previous studies have analyzed user interactions with web search results, but the focus of the analysis was on user interactions with the first page of search results. In this paper we conducted an experiment to better understand user interactions with multiple pages of search results. We used an eye tracking system called WebTracer, which allows us to collect and analyze data of users’ eye movements and operations during web search. The two findings were obtained from the results of our analysis. One is that users tend to view more search results in informational tasks (e.g.
web search for finding specific information) than that in navigational tasks (e.g. web search for finding specific web pages). This finding corresponds to previous studies which targeted the first page of search results, while the scope of our analysis was multiple pages. The other is that gaze duration in the top area of a search results page was longer than that in the bottom area of it. This would suggest that web search users rely on the position where search results are displayed, rather than ranking scores. |
